Should Your Small Business Use AI for Marketing? An Honest Take
June 21, 2026· Johnny Gregory
Every other ad right now promises AI will run your whole marketing for you. As someone who uses these tools every single day, let me give you the honest version: AI is an incredible accelerator and a terrible autopilot.
Here’s how to tell the difference.
Where AI genuinely helps
- First drafts. Staring at a blank page is the slowest part of writing. AI gets you to a rough draft in seconds so you can spend your time improving instead of starting.
- Ideas and angles. Stuck on what to post? AI is great for brainstorming directions you can pick from.
- Research and summarizing. Competitor scans, keyword ideas, turning a long transcript into notes — huge time savers.
- Repurposing. Turning one blog post into five social captions, fast.
Where AI hurts you
- Publishing it raw. Unedited AI content is generic, slightly off, and sounds like everyone else’s unedited AI content. Customers can feel it.
- Facts and specifics. AI will confidently state things that are wrong. Anything with numbers, names, or claims needs a human check.
- Your actual voice. AI doesn’t know your story, your town, or the way you talk to customers. That’s the part that earns trust — and it can’t be faked.
The approach that actually works
Use AI for speed, keep a human in charge of judgment. Draft fast, then a real person edits for accuracy, voice, and whether it’s actually good. That’s not a compromise — it’s the best of both: the output of a big team at the speed of one, without sounding like a robot.
The honest part
That’s literally how I work. AI does the heavy lifting on drafting and research; I do the polishing, the strategy, and the part that makes it sound like you. You get big-agency speed without the big-agency price tag — or the generic copy-paste content.
