The Free Google Tool Most Local Businesses Set Up Wrong
June 26, 2026· Johnny Gregory
If you only do one marketing thing this month, make it this: fix your Google Business Profile. It’s free, it’s the first thing customers see when they search for you, and it’s the single biggest lever for showing up in local results — yet most businesses claim it, fill in three fields, and never touch it again.
Here’s how to actually use it.
Fill out everything
Google rewards complete profiles. The businesses that show up in the map “3-pack” almost always have every field filled in:
- Categories — pick the most specific primary category, then add relevant secondary ones.
- Services & descriptions — list what you actually do, in plain language customers search for.
- Hours — including holiday hours (nothing kills trust like driving to a “closed” shop that said it was open).
- Service area — if you go to customers, set the towns you cover.
Add real photos — and keep adding them
Profiles with photos get dramatically more clicks and direction requests. Use real photos of your work, your team, your storefront — not stock. Add a few new ones every month; Google notices activity.
Post to it like a mini social feed
Most owners don’t realize you can post updates, offers, and news right on your profile. It’s free visibility on the exact page where buying decisions happen. Even a couple of posts a month signals you’re active and open.
Use the Q&A and reviews
- Q&A: seed it with the questions you get asked most — and answer them yourself.
- Reviews: respond to every single one. It tells both the customer and Google you’re engaged.
The honest part
None of this is hard. The catch is that it’s never “done” — a Google Business Profile rewards consistent attention, and that’s the thing that slips when you’re busy running the actual business.
That’s part of what I handle for local clients here in Nebraska and Iowa: keeping your profile optimized, posted to, and working for you so you show up when nearby customers are searching. If you’d rather not think about it again, book a free call and we’ll get it sorted.
