Your Website Has 5 Seconds to Make a Sale. Here's What It Needs.

When someone lands on your website, you have about five seconds before they decide to stay or hit the back button. A pretty site that fails that test still loses the customer. Here are the five things a homepage needs to actually convert a visitor into a lead.

1. A headline that says what you do and who it’s for

The number one homepage mistake is being vague or clever instead of clear. In one glance a visitor should know exactly what you offer and whether it’s for them. “Same-day appliance repair in Omaha” beats “Excellence you can trust” every time.

2. One obvious next step

Every page should have a single, clear call-to-action repeated where the eye lands — Call now, Book a free estimate, Get a quote. If visitors have to hunt for how to contact you, most won’t.

3. Proof you’re legit

People buy from businesses they trust. Put your trust signals up front: real reviews, recognizable logos or certifications, real photos of your work and your team. Borrowed credibility beats adjectives.

4. It has to work on a phone

The majority of your visitors are on mobile. If they have to pinch, zoom, or wait for a slow page, they’re gone. A site that isn’t fast and effortless on a phone is leaking customers daily — and you’d never see it in your analytics as anything but a “bounce.”

5. Speed

Every extra second of load time costs you visitors. Big images, bloated plugins, and cheap hosting quietly kill conversions. Fast is a feature.

The honest part

Notice that none of these are about looking fancy — they’re about being clear, fast, and pointed at one action. That’s the difference between a website that sits there and one that brings in work.

Building sites that actually convert (and load fast on a phone) is the core of what I do — modern, no-bloat websites for Nebraska and Iowa businesses, without the agency price tag. If your site looks fine but isn’t bringing in leads, book a free call and let’s figure out why.
